The History of the Building
130 years of living history continue to unfold.
STOES is housed in a historic building in Ioannina, with roots dating back to 1893. The stone gateway at the entrance — with the year engraved on it — was once the official entrance to Kallari Street, before being moved to its current location when the arcade was created.
At the end of the 19th century, the Romaniot businessman Loukas Batis brought together the small shops of the arcade under one roof, creating one of the liveliest commercial spaces in the city. On the ground floor, shops sold fabrics, spices, and colonial goods, while the basements served as storage. At the back, there was an old inn where merchants and travelers stayed.
During the German occupation, the building was requisitioned and converted into an administrative office, while the basements functioned as . Traces of this period — iron doors and small communication openings — still remain.
In 2019, the building was declared a heritage monument and carefully renovated to preserve its identity and authenticity. Today, it houses STOES Boutique Hotel and Nava Gastrobar, continuing its history in a new, contemporary way.
